When first investigating Mormonism I was biased in favor of Catholicism, because I believed Catholicism possessed and preserved the the best of European heritage. Unfortunately Europe in general and even the Catholic church seems content to see everything modernized/undermined.
Culturally and morally, Mormons do appear to preserve the best of Christian Europe. It is good to see them also doing it with music.
An 'aha' moment for me was when I realized that I would not be able to understand 1,500 years of Western civilization without understanding Christianity.
Take the above musical piece - what sense can one make of its lyrics or emotions, without understanding, to a significant extent, Christianity? And not just on an abstract or intellectual level.
The same goes for a large amount of the literature, architecture, painting, music, sculpture, and so on.
Indeed! I was also interested in pre-Christian Europe and even pursued a Religion degree in the hopes of understanding things better, but of course the traditions are dead. I then decided that what was best of those traditions have been incorporated into Christianity, or that Christianity makes whole those traditions...
Then of course, Europe as a whole only really existed as the Christian world. Now though I suppose it's primarily economic interest and materialism that binds it.
